Spent Grain and Pooch Pals - Umbra

Brewing is one of the most rewarding hobbies a person can have.  You have an opportunity to do something that is relatively easy, doesn’t take a lot of time, produces awesome tangible results, and allows you to share with your best buds.  Today we’re going to talk about ways to share your hobby with man’s true best friend, his/her dog!  (me!)

Next time you brew don’t throw away your spent grains!  Instead, save them in a Ziploc bag in your refrigerator until you’re ready to bake some delicious doggy treats!  You’ll need some simple ingredients to make these delicious all natural treats.

What you’ll need:

·         4 Tablespoons of Organic/All natural Peanut Butter

·         1 Egg

·         1 Cups of Whole Wheat Flour

·         3 Cups of Spent Grain

·         4 Tablespoons of Honey

This recipe was our first attempt together to make these treats; neither Ron or myself are professional chefs but these treats came about pretty tasty!

The steps were simple!

1.       Mix spent grains together with egg and flour. (eggs and flour not pictured)

2.       Add peanut and honey and then mix together thoroughly.
3.       Spread evenly in your baking tray.
4.       Bake for an hour and fifteen minutes at 350°F.

5.       Cool for an hour.

6.       Cut and serve!

I really enjoyed these treats and they were a great use of an otherwise trashed resource.  I think your pooch pal will enjoy these as much as I did!
One additional note:  We would love some Facebook (you can use the bottom of the page!) feedback on a way to make these better!  They were delicious and nutritious but some of the treats lacked consistency.  We ended up freezing them for a hard treat that lasted longer than a traditional treat.  Your suggestions are welcome!
