Sweets for My Sweetheart By: Nick Hack

For Valentine’s Day this year I thought I would do a special dessert for my special someone. Some after dinner treats can be extravagant and others can be quite simple. The recipe I have chosen is a simple dessert that looks extravagant and is sure to impress your loved ones. Chocolate is a decadent pleasure that can be easily prepared and add a quality unlike anything else to dessert. I paired a dark chocolate with a strong IPA as I wanted the hops to come through the rich flavor of the chocolate. The recipe can also be made with a strong stout as well that infuses a nice coffee flavor into the chocolate. Either way your loved one will be sure enjoy this recipe on Valentine’s Day or any day that you want to make special. At the end of the recipe I will show you two ways to display your work of art. Of course this is an easy and convenient recipe, that you can always keep around and use for everyday desserts like hot fudge sundaes.

  • 8oz. Dark Chocolate
  • ¼ C Lite or Heavy Cream
  • ¼ C Beer
  • Angel Food Cake
  • Assorted Fresh Fruit
  • Whipped Cream

Heat the cream and beer in a medium sauce pan and bring to a simmer.

While the milk and beer is heating chop the chocolate with a chef knife.

Next remove the milk from the heat and add to a bowl along with the chocolate and stir with a rubber spatula.

If the chocolate does not fully melt, place bowl on top of small sauce pan over low heat with 1 inch of water at the bottom to make a double boiler.

After chocolate is melted you can remove the sauce form the stove and either place in a tightly sealed container for later use or use immediately for your favorite dessert.

To make a parfait take a goblet or other wide mouthed glass and drizzle the inside with your chocolate sauce. Or you can cut a slice of cake and add fresh fruit and drizzle with chocolate sauce and top with a dollop of whip cream and a strawberry.
